It is totally realistic that an orphanage in those days would cover up abuses or dangers to children. That's exactly why we don't have orphanages these days. Beth broke in, stole the pills and made herself sick. Obviously she was ok in the end. I'm not sure why this is so hard to wrap your head around. Orphanages didn't have glowing reputations. I kept waiting for some more serious abuse against Beth to happen, it's almost unbelievable that nothing beyond the drugs happened.

You should read about Georgia Tann from the Tennessee Children's Home Society from the same era to learn about what was acatually happening in real orphanages and people looked the other way for decades. Stolen babies, dead and missing children, etc. There wasn't much oversight then.[/quote]
