Are Alexandria and SYC in MLS Next?
Yes. Along with Bethesda, Achilles, Armour and DCU.
I don't have a son so I'm not familiar with this league. Is MLS Next something new? Is this comparable to what GA is on the girls side? Were those teams (Alexandria and SYC) in the DA prior to this year?
It’s something the MLS put together in the wake of DA dissolution. Core DA teams DCU and Bethesda were retained as top members, as were other MLS academies and top DAs across the country. They planned to play only U15 and U17. MLS then sought applications from other noncore clubs for expansion. 175 applied across the country. 17 were accepted. Achilles, SYC and Alexandria were among them. VDA and Arlington boys had decided to leave for ECNL so they are out this year. League is playing U13-17, with the expansion teams playing U13 and U14.
1 MLS told USSF soccsr that they were backing out of Boys DA. Said it was a waste of their time and that they were going to form their own league. The idea of this was not post- DA. 2. You can not have a National league such few clubs. It cost too much. Thats were you come in, SYC, Alexandria, and whoever else who will cut the check to financial support this endeavor. Arlington and VDA didn't join for a reason.
On the second point, the supplemental clubs are a small percentage of membership, and if what you say is valid, they would have taken more than 17 out of 175. But whatever makes you feel better. I don’t think leagues matter for top coaches and teams.
Lol...then why play in the MLS league...if none of it matters?
Cause you don’t want to play ecnl? What I mean is that the league does not make the team. The teams make the league.
You mean clubs...and they've already done this before...this isnt new....its super expensive and the filler clubs will pay to off set what they really want. Money to develop their chosen players. You will be essentially funding MLS youth academies of which your kids are not in.
No. I mean teams. Clubs are not great. Individual teams are great. Great clubs will often generate great teams. But club based leagues are generally dumb, especially at younger ages. I wouldn’t care about helping MLS DAs by having my kid play for a non-MLS team. I would rather do that have my son play in a country club league like ECNL, where they are paying airlines instead of MLS academies when they are not playing clubs down the street that had to drop out of CCL. But that is just me. Other reasonable people may disagree, though I might not count you among the reasonable.
