It’s more left leaning politics than lawyers and I say this as someone who leans left. When Trump came out for opening schools, going in person became coded as a Trumpist thing. So left leaning people who are more disposed to risk aversion in terms of coronial generally have a hard time allowing schools to open. There is this belief that closing the schools is based on sound science. But the actual science behind that it’s nearly so strong as many people believe. And it is hard to dissuade people from extreme corona risk aversion because it happens to align with the position that idiot trumpers stumbled into.
Study after study has shown that schools are in general not places of large infection rates. Sure, there are some cases linked to schools in general, but most students and faculty/staff who have tested positive, it has been traced back to community spread, not school. This coming from someone who also leans left but seems ironic the party that calls out conservatives for not believing in science and for being uneducated are themselves not believing in science and are hell bent on keeping kids uneducated. Maybe their particular kids have the luxury of tutors, sahp, etc but the vast majority of children do not.
Right. But, as we all know, leftist/ liberals don’t care about studies and science if they conflict with their political narrative
I think people are being well meaning in wanting to be very cautious. It is not some crazy plot to take down republicans. But it is not a very rational assessment of the risks. In situations like this where there is the risk to life involved - the people that think they are protected life have a hard time accepting countervailing considerations. The very cautious people think they have life on their side and you can’t explain that away with countervailing facts or values. In this way, much of the left is acting similar to right leaning people with respect to abortion. If you think you are protecting life, people end up stealing out some pretty didactic views that don’t take into account the nuance that exists in the world
People who believe in the mitigation efforts to reduce the spread of COVID and presumably therefore reduce the deaths associated need to also acknowledge the number of deaths that will occur BECAUSE of the mitigation efforts. The UK is doing a study on this as I type but the initial rationale behind the study was the uptick in heart attack deaths, suicides, etc...that coupled with for example approx 10,000 more children will die of hunger worldwide each month due to the COVID mitigation efforts preventing food disruption. All of this is to say- you can't wave a flag saying I am protecting those who are vulnerable to dying of COVID without waving another flag saying these other deaths are ok because we saved some.
