Newsham was on TV saying they were aware of the event but did not have enough officers to break it up. Except he didn't even know what time the party started to gain momentum (sometime between 9 and after midnight when shots fired.) So did he have ANY officer in the area?
There were a number of officers there, but not enough to force the gathering to disperse.
Then why couldn't he answer the simple question (in his own press conference) of what time the party started?
MPD actually had prior notice about the party and failed to plan. If this was in Georgetown, MPD would have had a plan well in advance. MPD spend time, money and resources for the parties, particularly halloween party in Georgetown. MPD Chief and Muriel don't care because to them, they aint nothing but a bunch of n%%errs.
Black people are overpoliced. Thus is the wrong time to crack down on minor infractions. Remember how nypd harassed black people about masks and distancing and barely blinked at white people? The cops can't just run up with their guns because someone is having a party.
I would hope that they would break up a block party in Georgetown, too. There needs to be equal policing health violations because the virus doesn’t care if you are rich, poor, black, or white. It should have been broken up just like any other gathering should be broken up.
The police have been told by the Mayor that Covid measures like mask wearing and gatherings are "voluntary". The Council voted to deprive them of crowd control techniques. Since gathering is voluntary and they have no crowd control techniques, what would you have them do? Ask nicely through bullhorns? I guess they can try that next time.
This may be an unpopular opinion here as I see a lot of sarcastic references to "violence interrupters" but I feel this is a perfect example of how they can help. If police are under order to not enforce the over 50 crowd limit, it is possible that multiple violence interrupters being deployed in advance, who actually know the people and dynamics involved at this particular party (it's an annual event) could have become aware of a building tension (or even a premeditated plan if that was the case) and been able to at least convince some people to go home, if not prevent the entire incident. Or even pushed it somewhere on the outskirts of the party so an not to endanger Innocents. Sorry for the run on sentence.
