I guess she thought she was athletic and confident enough to handle it?

It was still daylight when they went in. 4:30pm. But I heard the waves and winds were extremely high quickly - 2 feet waves and with dusk happening around 6:30pm it would have quickly gotten frigid and impossible to navigate.

Makes me wonder if the canoe didn't have a rower?

She was with an 8-yr old so maybe he didn't have the strength to help her turn the canoe around in the waves.[/quote]

They said where she put the canoe in was in a small calm cove. They didn't live in that house and probably didn't know the full effects of waves and wind and how quickly they would get pulled out of the cove. They just paddled a little too far out.[/quote]
