Having watched outlander since day 1, and having seen Sam in films prior to outlander, I’ve followed him on social media, read fan forum posts, seen pics, etc. His management team has scrubbed the internet. His rabid fans scoured the web when he was “dating” MacKenzie, and they did a great job proving that she was merely his beard (she had a real BF FFS!). His management realized the fake relationship did more harm than good, which is why the current approach of “I’m focusing on my career so I’m too busy to date” is safer.

There were tons of posts about how he was openly gay prior to his outlander success. He was doing theater and small European films, and nobody cared.

Agreed.  Who cares?  Whether or not he is gay doesn’t affect my enjoyment of the show.
