I had to set aside my judgment to lean about Juice WRLD because I wanted to understand my teenagers’ feelings. Yes, he wrote songs about drugs and depression. He expressed vulnerability in a culture that doesn’t allow young men, especially young black men, to do that. Many teens and young people are really feeling this loss.
Exact same situation here. I prefer other types of music, but my teens love rap. Last year, one of my sons went through a really tough breakup with a long-time girlfriend, and he was struggling with it. All the songs on Juice Wrld's Goodbye and Good Riddance were about his struggles after a breakup, and every time my rap-hating DH traveled for work, my son would pull up youtube so we could talk about each song in detail, including what things Juice Wrld was capturing in his lyrics that expressed what my son was feeling. It was torture for me at first, because I didn't like the music and just heard "Drugs, drugs, drugs, evil b*tches, drugs, guns, drugs." But after a few weeks of this, I started appreciating how clever and sincere many of the songs were. I honestly think that album helped my son work through his emotions and get to an OK place much more quickly than he otherwise would have. We did talk at the time about how nice it would be if Juice Wrld was handling his problems by talking to family and friends and getting lots of exercise and sleep instead of self-medicating with substances, but at no time did I (or have I ever) felt like my kids wanted to emulate that lifestyle just many because the rappers they love take part in all the dangerous stuff.
