OP, plenty of people I know commute from Hagerstown or from West Virginia. I-270 and Marc are ready when you are. I love the public transportation, and the parks and the libraries. The small conservative town I am from in the south just tried to defend the local library, there is no recycling, and so many students are low income they just made the high schools all free lunch. Taxes are super low, and the wealthy keep most of their money, as there are very few county / city services. You would love it.
I posted before about my in-laws from a similar area. They love to tease about our bordering a “No Nukes” zone or Ellsworth being closed to cars for the farmers’ market. They shut up when they compare my DD’s education and other aspects of her life as a teen (like taking the free Ride-On to our pretty well-stocked libraries and rec centers with dance and other classes) to her cousins who would be stranded in town with nothing to do for hours if they missed the school bus, so they go home and watch YouTube. My niece is just as interested in science and martial arts as my DD was at that age. There’s virtually no science in her school and no rec center at all, let alone low cost classes.
