PP you will never be convinced that there is a problem. OP asked black educated families to spend their time and emotional labor relaying our experiences, but ultimately, this is not the forum for it. Many of us have done what is best for our kids and moved them to settings that we feel will be most beneficial for them to reach their potential, be that WOTP, certain charters, or private (our choice). Some of you will never be persuaded. For those who are genuinely curious, perhaps raise it with some of the black families you know well IRL.
Hi it's your friendly OP again. Your points are certainly true. I asked people to share something painful, and motivations can be mixed and complicated. I certainly want to talk to fellow parents at my kids' school east of the Park. My motivation for asking it here was to get a chance to ask a lot of people at once (plus anonymously). I'm guess I'm not too surprised that there's more argument than information here; this IS the same DCUM it has always been...
PP here. I commented given some of the gaslighting that is going on in the thread--some PPs are questioning the validity of perspectives from the handful of AA PPs who've responded. But yes, you should also be aware of what your ask is of a group that may feel less welcome here--even my white friends have called out the racism on this site. It's often subtle and goes unreported. Also keep in mind that there may not be many UMC AA families on this site, especially in the DC public schools forum. So I'm not sure you're going to get the fruitful discussion you're hoping for here. I've offered my perspective on other threads that specifically ask about race, only to get racist comments in response, so I'm more reticent recently to even comment.
