My DS is 12, 6th grade ES and no phone. He has an iPad though so he can chat with friends. His friends all have phones but old crappy ones and plenty of them are FARM kids living in section 8 housing. I think his friends in section 8 have them because their parents work all the time and it’s an easy way to get in touch with them. My DS doesn’t ask for one so we didn’t push it. We’ll revisit in MS as it would be more of a necessity when he’s doing after school activities.
This is exactly my son! He's the only kid, I believe who doesn't have one. He has an iPad at home. He will get one at the beginning of 7th. Young children have phones now. They walk out of their houses staring at the screen, walk to school staring at them.
I’m the poster you quoted. My son will ask the office, a friend or the coach to borrow their phone if he needs to reach me.
I don't allow mine to share their phones and if they do they lose the privilege. Give your kid a basic phone or gizmo watch if they need to contact you. As an adult, I don't let other people's kids on my phone. If its an emergency I will call for them but otherwise no. If you don't think its ok they have a phone, they have no need to be on mine or my child's either.
