Location seems great for a dc or Baltimore commute. Not sure how it would be to Virginia or anything past DC. House priced are great, even with high taxes. Schools are poor but with houses so low Private is usually what people do.
I find this sort of comment funny. Most people in PG do not send their kids to private school. Most people in PG send their kids to their local elementary or to one of the many magnet programs. Many people with a higher SES or people who are religious send their kids to private school. I live in PG and we are zoned for a decent elementary and a terrible middle and high school. Most of the white middle class people in my neighborhood send their kids to public for elementary and then either stay at one the magnet programs for middle high school or start their kids in private in grade 6/7. The vast majority of people who live in PG can not afford private schools.
Maybe not MOST but many do. PGC has a really strong private school culture. For many with higher SES it is almost default.
This is basically what's holding me back from moving there so far. Can't afford private, are there anywhere near enough magnet slots for MS/HS?
Depends on your kids abilities. If they are TAG identified (>80% on OLSAT) there are plenty of places in the TAG centers. Everyone who applied to Glenarden Woods and Kenmoor got in last year. In parts of the county that are zoned for other TAG center the odds aren’t as good.
Do you have to go to a TAG center for elementary to be eligible for middle? That's more my worry, I'd like the kids to go to elementary close by.
In theory kids in a neighborhood elementary can go to a TAG middle school but practically if you are zoned for Greeebt MS TAG then the only way you will get a slot is through continuity from an elementary TAG center. The TAG programs at Kenmoor and Tasker MS have a decent number of slots open for lottery because they opened the Tasker TAG center last year and now the Bowie kids go there.
