Who is eligible for the Westland MS? What percentage of 5th graders are even eligible to apply? 0.0007%?
https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/curriculum/specialprograms/middle/immersion-spanish.aspx https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/curriculum/specialprograms/elementary/immersion-spanish.aspx
Exactly. Not many kids are going to be able to attend the Westland program. Not really a ‘choice’ for the majority of families in the County.
There is no school in the county that students from a majority of families in the county are going to be able to attend. It isn't possible for there to be such a thing. Now, if you were interested in a more limited argument, like "There ought to be an ES-MS Spanish immersion program in the upcounty," that might be useful.
Oh, please. Someone posted all these MSs as if MCPS were actually offering families a choice. We were just pointing out that there really is just an illusion of choiceX. Very few families are even eligible for these MS programs. Not really a ‘choice’. And that’s not an argument that I’m interested in. I’d prefer MCPS offers Spanish for kids starting in K and going all the way through. As is done in other school districts.
