Not everyone adheres to WASP-y notions of what's appropriate. Diamond studs are perfectly acceptable daytime wear in a lot of cultures. The fact that you deem this to be savage (i.e. akin to being raised by wolves) says a lot more about you than it does about the people wearing the earrings your judging.[/quote]

The royals didn’t “invent” the rule. It’s a long-standing requirement that well-bred ladies save diamonds (other than engagement rings) for dinner and later. You don’t have to agree, but I think it’s always helpful to learn about unspoken class indicators.[/quote]

This is an antiquated rule that even well bred, old money eschew.  "Well bred" women would have never had their ears pierced in the first place, wouldn't ever wear pants of any kind or leave home without pantyhose.
