It’s hard to be poor. But there is a reason people move or live in different places. Poor people don’t have that luxury. Others do. Berating people for not being poor or for not wanting to go to school with poor people sounds good on paper yet it is a losing proposition. It’s as old as time. Very few people stay in a poor neighborhood or school when they have other choices. The boundaries should have been done county wide. Period. Call APS out about that. Once again terrible planning puts South Arlington in an untenable situation with no good solution.
Obviously the county situation is much more stark and ideally would be addressed. However, I think central Arlington latches onto that argument because (1) it's more realistic for the central area to pull from the north simply by virtue of geography and (2) to deflect from the fact that they don't want to be pushed farther south. Those of us in the south aren't pushing for county-wide busing because no one wants it, include the lower income folks. APS has said repeatedly that they hear, from everyone, that they want schools close to home. I believe that. I prefer it for my family as well. So in that world, where people do want to be close to home, we in the south are identifying those planning units that are close by (closer than others currently being proposed) that could come to our school and provide a little bit of diversity to a school that would otherwise be concentrated low-income. Also please note that APS's proposal makes Drew *more* low income than it would otherwise be if just Nauck proper were considered. I made a spreadsheet with all the planning units and Nauck alone is slightly less poor than APS's proposed boundary for Drew (and that's even before you consider that there is not as much CAF in Nauck as there is on the western end of the Pike, so Nauck by itself has more capacity to slowly turn over/gentrify).
