I really like the show, but I do think the plot line with Joel is a bit weird. I don't think they're writing him out, though. I like most of the characters with the exception of Christina. She is so whiny and earnest. The meeting with Max's history teacher got on my nerves... I really think the teacher should have articulated that Max was disrupting the whole class with his tangential facts. And then, at the end of that episode, with Christina researching how to start a school and saying "How hard can it be?" I mean, really? REALLY? She's so annoying. I've also felt that Camille seems emotionally disengaged from her children, almost passive, until they need something from her. I know they are adults, but I still look to my mother for emotional guidance. Maybe that's just my experience of having a more nosy, but loving, mom. :)
I agree on the passiveness and the inability for her to hardly speak due the massive Botix she must have in her upper lip - you can hear the heaviness of the lip as she slurs her words...BUT to be fair, I have also wondered if she may perhaps have health issues we were not aware of. If you watch closely, in some episodes, it appears she is barely standing, her voice quivering and looking back, she hardly moves about at all. So this led me to believe that she is perhaps far more frail than the fans know and in rapidly declining health. I figured when she left the show for italy, it may have been for serious health issues as when she came back, every scene she is in, she has very few lines, does not do to much at all physically, has a tremor or quiver in her voice and almost seems like she is struggling to breath. In one episode in season 6, she is standing outside the new house in a weather that is so large and stationary on her, I was curious if they were hiding something under it like an oxygen tank or something - not joking. You have to back and look but the whole appearance seems extremely odd to the point where it looked like she had to be propped up from behind to even stand there. I think there may have been some health issues that they kept hidden.
