At the very least, it helps put things in perspective. Sometimes you get the vibe from places like DCUM that schools like Whitman are such pressure cookers where everyone is is going to a top college and only losers are going to schools like Georgia or Penn State or South Carolina. But as this list demonstrates, it's not everyone, or even anywhere near the majority of kids going to Ivies/equivalents (or even schools like Vanderbilt).
The truth is that it is a pressure cooker environment and those who do not excel academically are made to feel inferior.
No one is "making" anyone else feel inferior. I've had one kid there who was a high achiever and another who is a decent, but not great student. Their friends at Whitman have been all over the map. There are lots of opportunities there for kids who don't want to load up on the max number of APs and strive all the time, and a wide variety of crowds to find your place in. That's one of the benefits of its large size IMO. The pressure cooker aspect for the top kids is not a result of anything the school does, more just a matter of hard working peers and, in some cases, overly involved parents.
BCC parent here and couldn't agree more.
