This is a good point.  Another thing that can be off putting to animal medicine students is that they might have to dissect a cat for Anatomy & Physiology.

Bottom line is, you go into animal medicine with the purpose of alleviating pet (and their human owner's) suffering.  Sometimes you get to save lives but sometimes it boils down to quality of life issues for both the pet and their owner.
