You can go to food banks but you won’t qualify for food stamps for yourself. However you might want to look into what your child qualifies for since they are a citizen.They might qualify for free breakfasts/lunches at school and that will help.

will food banks ask questions? I know this is incredibly stupid but not being a person of color or an elderly person I just think they will suspect I am trying to fool them. 
Also, for the free food at school - officially I (he) still has this above average income. 
My background is admin/EA/project manager type of work. 
The apartment is pretty inexpensive since it was rented a long time ago. I could score something for, say, 1800 instead of 2000, but not in the immediate area. I also tend to cling on to the present place irrationally...also it will be stress for the child as it is with dad moving out.

No the food banks won’t question you. Especially the church based ones. For the school, you absolutely can have you child qualify. You need to inform the school that your husband is no longer in the picture and is providing minimal support. You can apply based on your income.

Where are you located that you can’t find a less expensive apartment? There are a million super sleuths on the Real Estate board here that can probably  help identify a new place for you.
