I'm delighted that the heavily Democratic school board has decided to focus on equity. I particularly look forward to their taking steps to reduce the large class sizes in Vienna and other parts of the county, which are ridiculously large compared to those in, for example, the Mason and Mount Vernon Districts, where classes often max out at 15 or 16 kids.
What is the Mason district?
https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/pdf/Mason%20Magisterial%20District%20with%20ES%20MS%20and%20HS%20SY%2017%2018.pdf
I have kids at a Mason district school. It has smaller class sizes because of the Title 1 status. Our K class a few years ago was 19 kids, 2nd grade has 22 kids. The smaller class sizes are intended to accommodate the fact that a higher percentage of the kids are ESOL or have other disadvantages and require extra attention. I haven't seen a class with 15 kids, though, would be interested in knowing what school has that happen "often"?
Parklawn, for example. But people in Vienna would love classes with 19-22 kids. If equity is our new lens, I'm sure the Board will work to reduce the class size disparities.
