And, as the child of legal immigrants who grew up right next to one of the areas discussed in that article, I disagree with your assessment that "White middle America" is tolerant of legal immigration of non-whites.

There are great things about the US...and in many ways we are a more tolerant society than most. But there is rampant racism and xenophobia in this country as well. Ask any non-white, wherever they grew up, and they will tell you.[/quote]

LIkely the immigrant child poster is Indian and her parents were part of the first wave of Indian brain drain in the 1970s.  They were lured to small towns where few people had seen an Indian or knew anything about them.  The physician parent was tolerated because "good Old Doc Jones" retired and no one would come to BFE to replace him.   Of course, the poster was a target of discrimination. She was the oddity and people probably also resented that her parent earned more money than they could.   BTDT[/quote]
