If she had really been concerned about the meanness of the conversation among her friends she would have taken a screen shot and showed it to her parents, a teacher, a counselor, or some other trusted adult. Instead, she sent it to a classmate of the current victim; there's really no logic to that beyond wanting to stir up more trouble. And haven't we all known someone like that...you know, the type who says things like, "I would never say this, of course, but you know I've heard some other people saying x, y, and z awful thing about you [or a friend or whomever].
