I can't believe how nasty some of these posts are. Some of them need to be reported to admin. It's extremely unlikely an 8-year-old is going to enjoy an 2 hour drive, where he is probably going to fall asleep, followed by a 2-3 hour game, where he is probably going to eat a massive amount of junk food and fall asleep, and then wake up so he can walk across a stadium parking lot very late at night and take a 2 hour drive home again. He will be able to tell you all about the cotton candy and nachos, but nothing about the game.
Honestly, if this was a 3 year old I would be more concerned. But an 8 year old will probably chatter the whole way there and he'll have a blast at the game (at least mine would have at that age). If the boy is overly tired and grumpy the whole evening then Dad will deal with it and probably wait until the boy is older to make a trip like that again. Obviously, if Op is legitimately worried about her husband driving home at night then she should get him a hotel room. I would probably get a hotel room and come along with them to hang out in the room. That way there would be no long drive back home and if the boys had to miss a day from school, so what?
