34% of the impacted elementary school students are from the Rt. 1 corridor, impacting 8 elementary schools. 295 of 859 elementary students. All from marginalized communities - low income, ESOL. 19 - from Ft. Belvoir to Washington Mill (students who live off base. There are 3 apartment complexes and one road of single family homes right off base that currently go to FB. Anyone can rent in those apartments/buy those homes.) 35 - from Riverside to Stratford (eliminating a split feeder.). It's a small neighborhood off Rt. 1 consisting of single family and townhomes. I believe it's part of Gum Springs, the historic black community along Rt. 1 76 - from Riverside to Woodlawn. These are three condo, townhouse communities on the "wrong side" of Rt. 1. To help alleviate overcrowding at Riverside and keep the kids on the same side of Rt. 1 for elementary school. Even though they are condos/townhomes, they are pretty run down neighborhood. 107 - from Ft. Hunt to Mount Vernon Woods. These kids live in an apartment complex practically walking distance to MVW (0.9 miles from the front of the complex to MVW.) They've been bused 5 miles past 5 closer elementary schools to FH for years. 58 - from Groveton to Hybla Valley. This is an apartment complex behind one of the strip malls on Rt. 1. These kids are bused past Hybla Valley to get to Groveton And we spent how much on this review to impact 1/3 of the students in the county from a couple of mile radius and 5% of the elementary schools?
The majority of the high school changes come from just two high schools - McLean and Marshall. Those changes are nowhere near the Route 1 corridor, but rather in Tysons (McLean to Langley) and Vienna (Marshall to Madison). And that’s a prelude to the larger changes for the new western HS.
