NATO is supposed to be a shared defense organization. Not a "you can eff around, spend nothing on defense, and America will come rescue you" organization. I really don't give a crap how Europeans feel about any of this. You do realize that they have free health care and incredible social benefits, while expecting us to pay for their defense. How is that fair to poor Americans? I'm not okay with this. They can either step up and pull their weight, or we will take Greenland and more. And furthermore, if they want to seek protection from Russia rather than us, they will be in an even worse boat. They have completely given up- stagnant economies, moronic decisions like closing nuclear plants so now high energy bills and worse pollution, no defense, no children and no future. [/quote]

Checkout US overseas bases and see which ones are in NATO members countries. Look at shared bases. The US will be kicked out of everyone of these bases and countries. No more tanker fleet, no use of any European airspace or overseas territory. Losing Diego Garcia will really hurt. With out Turkey and Italy’s base you can not defend Israel. You can attack Iran because of the refueling assets being most NATO.

The US will not able to project power.  We will be out of Europe, the pacific, five eyes, Canadian airspace will be off limits, etc. The US will have to increase defense spending by 5 times and still not have the same abilities we have now. We will not be able to supply our fleet or use port facilities.

NATO countries have a GDP of 27 trillion. The US GDP is 29 trillion. Now look at how much the NATO members spend - 500 billion a year. This is just for European defense. The US spends 825 billion. The European will drop US defense contracts. This will increase procurement and maintenance cost by 2-4 times.

It would be a true peace dividend for the US to disengage from defending Europe from themselves and Russia. Europe is very unlikely to repeat WWl-WWII given the success of the EU. And Russia is weak and getting weaker given its reliance on selling fossil fuels for funding. So why are we there, when they don’t want us? NATO was necessary 75 years ago, but long past the time to sunset it. Close the bases, bring the troops home, and let’s focus on our house.[/quote]
