So from earlier in the thread, Juliana was the au pair for the Banfields by 11/21. J-1 can only be 2 years people have said. 1 year + extension. Juliana's mother says she recently applied for visa to be extended. What could be the basis? Anyone surprised he has not married her? Bet she was hoping. https://www.instagram.com/p/CW5yWhDrffP/
After au pairing in the US for two years, she wouldn't be able to extend her J-1 visa as an au pair. Either her mom misunderstood, or she was applying to switch her visa status from J-1 to F-1 as a student. An F-1 visa would have allowed her to stay in the US legally and go to school. It's really hard for au pairs to do this, though, because they have to have a sponsor, who agrees to pay the tuition for all four years. The sponsor has to actually show proof of funds and sign an affidavit promising to pay even if the student quits school. Plus, under a student visa, she wouldn't legally be able to work, so she'd have to show that she has a means of supporting herself without working. If she is trying to get an F-1 student visa, either she has a rich relative or BB is sponsoring her. In the case of the latter, immigration official often frown upon host families sponsoring their former au pairs, because it suggests that the student is still going to be working for the host family as a childcare provider, which is prohibited under visa rules. It's rare for an au pair to successfully switch from J-1 to F-1. Most of the time they just stay in the US illegally or get married.
