I would argue that Trump actually fell into the Democrats’ trap. They’ve allowed him and his gang of grifters to get more and more comfortable breaking norms and laws without much pushback. And now he’s handed them an impeachable offense on a platter: attempting to convince a foreign government to meddle in America’s election. My assumption is that Pelosi figures that if he did it once in 2016, he would do it again in 2020. And this time Trump has roped in Pence, Barr, Giuliani, and Pompeo. Democrats could have started the impeachment process a year ago, there was already plenty to work with. However, they decided to wait. Do Republicans ever ask themselves why? In one fell swoop, Democrats can make a credible case that Trump’s cabinet is compromised.
You build a nice case, but honestly, no one on any side made any great plans or strategies. Things are just too complex and unpredictable. Pelosi didn't want her swing-state congresspeople to lose out, that's why she was holding the line on impeachment previously. Trump apparently had this fixation on Ukraine since day 1 and was obsessed with sinking Biden (probably Dem nominee, associated with Obama and Clinton). Pelosi seized the moment when Trump was revealed to have acted rashly regarding Biden, because it just happened to be the time when swing state polls were showing people were tired of Trump and congresspeople there calculated they would be more popular taking a stand than skulking in corners. It was GOOD TIMING. This is how the world turns, with much less plotting and conspiracy than we think.
PP here: You make good points. I agree that a lot of this comes down to timing and opportunity. That said, Pelosi was wise enough to know that DJT’s existing crimes were not enough to move the needle. Hence why they waited, as Trump became more and more brazen & careless. Yes, she was trying to protect moderate Dems as their voters seem to not care about POTUS committing crimes that are financial in nature. However, I would argue that the Democrats must impeach. If they don’t, DJT will continue to solicit foreign actors to meddle in the 2020 election. In that case, I believe Democrats do actually lose. At with impeachment, they can fight back and chart their own destiny. Democrats won’t win if they sit on their hands and let Trump conspire with foreigners.
PP you replied to. YES, I agree with you. Trump had Russia meddle for Clinton, he pushed Ukraine to meddle for Biden, and if we don't stop him he will keep at it and we will lose.
You people are insane. Can't let go of Russia. And, the idea that Trump was asking for Ukraine's help in investigating the 2016 election seems to have escaped you.
