Its sounding like Russia has fire control over the last road into Avdeeka. Ukraine is shifting the 47th and 82nd to that front as well. Surely Ukraine realizes its waltzing into another Bakhmut? But then again, when you believe your own propaganda, you're bound to make big mistakes.
This has been an incredibly costly offensive for Russians. They've lost thousands of soldiers and hundreds of pieces of equipment. The Ukrainians are fighting from well-established defensive positions. Russians are advancing over heavily-mined open fields. Artillery is dialed in. They are getting obliterated. Will they ultimately take Avdiivka? Probably. But they're resorting to using human waves of poorly equipped and untrained soldiers. The Chechens have been brought in to shoot Russians that retreat and there are now reports of soldiers refusing orders. It's certain death for them on that front. But Putin wants this victory before winter sets in. And Ukraine has decided that if Russians are willing to get destroyed here, they'll oblige them. In the end, like Bakhmut, Avdiiivka will be just another pile of rubble. The Russian military will be significantly depleted. And the rest of the world will be left to wonder why are Russians so willing to die? It's roughly a quarter million casualties and counting so far for what was supposed to be a three day operation to take Ukraine. It's been a strategic catastrophe for Russia for which NATO will be forever grateful.
All that matters is: did Ukraine push out the Russian troops and reclaim their territory. Right now the answer is "no". Russian losses are not material. They have 3x the population of Ukraine and will conscript that last poor SOB to win this war. Also technology doesn't matter. Russia is succeeding in maintaining its occupation with low-tech 1950's artillery and human wave attacks.
You forget that Russia's military is spread across Asia. Russia only has 3x the population after pulling out everyone from across the globe, whereas Ukrainians are mostly clustered in and around their country. Russia dumped so much personnel and equipment into Ukraine, the Kremlin would have issues if an internal unrest situation or external 2nd front developed. And apparently Putin is thinking the exact same thing. "Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed a topic of national import at the Council of Council meeting: The turnover of weapons within Russia." https://bnn.network/politics/putin-speaks-on-weapons-turnover-an-enigma-wrapped-in-power/ But it's interesting timing that coincides with (unsubstantiated) rumors of Putin's heart attack from the "General SVR" Telegram account. It's ironic since "General SVR" is the Russian equivalent of Q-Anon, giving the Russians a dose of their own medicine. It might also explain why Solovyov was so brave going against Russia's policy to support Iraq and Syria against Israel? "the GeneralSVR Telegram channel, reported late on Thursday night that Russia’s leader had “died at his luxury Valdai forest palace.”" "Russian President Vladimir Putin died tonight at his residence on Valdai. At 20:42 (8:42 p.m.) Moscow time, doctors stopped resuscitation and pronounced him dead.” According to the report the doctors “were kept blocked in the room with Putin's corpse” by Putin’s security detail while Kremlin officials decided on how to “preserve the current regime and use Putin's double.” It went on that this was “on the personal order of Dmitry Kochnev [the head of the Russian Presidential Security Service], who is in touch and receives instructions from the Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Nikolai Patrushev [Secretary of the Security Council of Russia].” “Dmitry Kochnev carries out the instructions of the Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Nikolai Patrushev...Negotiations on the creation of a coalition of representatives of the near-Putin elites under the leadership of Nikolai Patrushev, to preserve the current regime and use Putin's double in the image of the president, have almost been completed.” “[With] no respect for the deceased. Putin’s corpse was placed in a freezer, which previously contained deep-frozen food, at the presidential residence in Valdai.” https://www.kyivpost.com/post/23334 Whether true or not, I feel sorry for Putin's body double(s). Pharos take their toys with them.
Russia has already pulled a lot of their border troops leaving themselves vulnerable, along with abandoning (former) allies like Armenia rather than helping to protect them as they had previously promised. Russia's weakness continues to grow by the day.
