Honest question here, how exactly are players selected for the U.S. Talent ID? From where we’re sitting, it does seem like only names tied to CC and ED or whoever happens to attend the host school. Meanwhile, there are plenty of girls out there quietly showing up, playing lights-out week after week, and somehow never quite making the list. So I was just wondering… are players sent in are club favorites, or are U.S. scouts the ones doing the choosing? Not trying to stir up trouble, just trying to connect the dots.
It’s mostly club favorites unless there is a clear superstar. But even in that case the superstar will of course also be a coach favorite. There really isn’t much differentiation among players at a club despite parents who think their child is special. Many players are hard working and deserving. The club wants to send players who best represent the club and coaches, and also reward loyal players and families. Sometimes promises are made in order to recruit players to the club or prevent players from leaving. While the selection process is flawed also realize these selections mean very little in college recruiting. Especially for the younger ages. Everybody knows clubs get invites to hand out and these talent ids are a dime a dozen. Like student of the month at school. For the few special players who are truly at the YNT level, who are selected and attend the regional or national camps, the scouts know who they are already from watching them at showcase events. If you aren’t sure if your child is at that level, then I have to break it to you: they aren’t.
So ALL selection processes are flawed with humans in the loop so that says nothing. But your statement that “there really isn’t much differentiation among players at a club” is a real loser argument. Of course there is, just watch a couple games and it’s pretty clear there is. You might have tried to provide an honest neutral answer but sounds like you’re a bit bitter on how your kid stacks up. Is their bias, yep. Do we all have some bias, yep. You got a solution, nope. Work hard, train hard, take risks, look for the best opportunity to excel and then maybe you make it to the top. No guarantees in life or soccer is a cliche but true. Best of luck to all the kids.
What I meant to say is there aren’t many true standout players on the typical ECNL/GA team. Of course some players are better than others on the same team. But they are mostly all just good players. There are very few great players and most teams don’t have any great players. Just because a player is the best on their team doesn’t make them a great player. YNT is for the great players. But these clubs have talent id spots to fill so the just good players have to get them. The problem becomes when these just good players (and their parents) with a talent id start thinking they are great. The coaches know the difference.
Ok, with you now!
