"Opalite" is about Travis's ex girlfriend he dated for five years? It's so gross to be a billionaire with this sort of platform attacking a random middle class Black woman who dated your fiancé.
It's not only psychopathic mean girl bullying of a lone non-famous Black woman, it's flat out embarrassing she has to reach back to her man's past relationship for song material.
Agreed. Both this and Actually Romantic are weird to me because it demonstrates that she's sitting around thinking/imagining what people like Travis's ex, or Matty's circle of friends, are doing now that she and Travis have moved on from them. That's a very unhealthy mentality, and is a weird thing to be thinking about right before getting engaged. It's very backwards looking and makes me wonder if she's making decisions for her own happiness and satisfaction, or if it's about proving these other people wrong or showing them up.
I’m surprised this is sparking such a reaction tbh because these songs aren’t new for Taylor and I don’t think it means she’s not a girls girl or doesn’t support other female artists. I also suspect it goes way beyond a response to Sympathy is a Knife.
What could Charli possibly have done that would merit being called out for a public flogging the way Taylor is doing it? Like assume Charli does call Taylor "Boring Barbie" behind her back and did celebrate Matty breaking up with her. So? This is not some great offense. Charli is married to Matty's best friend and bandmate. Of course she is going to support Matty in the breakup. So she uses some random insult about Taylor privately? Who cares. Have you never made fun of someone one of your friends used to date? Please. The stuff about Travis's ex is more attenuated to me. Yes I see the references in the lyrics but it's not obvious unless you know a LOT of details about these people's lives. Whereas the Charli stuff is very overt and it's easy to see what she's saying, and it's clear the entire song is not just about Charli but intended as some kind of public insult. It's tacky and petty and completely unnecessary. Taylor could have written a song about her feelings about the Charli situation without so explicitly attacking and referencing Charli. And it also would have made the song more universal and easy to identify with. But it's obvious she wanted to punish Charli. It's so vindictive.
Yup the way it all all leads back to her being upset that Matty broke up with her. So the heroin chic crew talked about her after the break up. At her big age that shouldn't bother her to the point she's devalued her own writing capabilities. I defend her making music about people because it can be a great introspective journey. Some of her music can be juvenile but in my opinion she does good at being witty with it. This was weird and uncalled for.
