I think this is an important point, when you say it is all BS. It actually is not all BS. I do feel bad for Harvard, because the Trump Administration is not negotiating in good faith and is overreaching. And certainly the threat of pulling Harvard’s tax exemption is grossly unfair and illegal. But it is not all BS. The race politics and race identity focus of Harvard is actually harming the people it is intended to help. The DEI programming was terribly misguided. It is a tough situation. Trump is a bad person and a poor President, no doubt. But when a large number of your fellow Americans say something is wrong, I suggest you not dismiss it as BS coming from ignorant people. Instead, maybe you should think harder about why some of these people are upset and what solutions might be acceptable to both sides.
It's difficult to see it that way when the people criticizing "elite" universities are the graduates of those universities who (1) chose to attend (2) have benefitted greatly from their education there or (3) are not college-educated people who disparage college education to begin with. DEI programming has gone off the rails in general. So FIX it by adjusting, not be entirely eliminating it and everything else ultra-conservatives dislike. But that's not what the administration is trying to do. They are not interested in fixing it. They are only interested in eliminating everything they dislike and/or stands in their way.
So what was the plan? Let's go so far to the left on all fronts that we lose the next election and trust that trump will cut just enough back to get us to a happy middle? He can tearHarvard to the ground and he will lose exactly zero support over it.
The plan is exactly what they're doing. This administration wants to tear these things down entirely. For them, it's not really about excessive "wokism." It's using that as an excuse to eliminate everything that threatens or goes against wealthy white men in charge. I'd argue we already went too far left and that's precisely why "we" lost the last election. The vast majority of the country straddles the center. What needs to happen is (1) the majority of Republicans in Congress need to grow their pair and start doing their jobs; (2) all electeds need to stop the "us/them" and "all or nothing" approach and actually get back to finding common ground and reasonable compromises; (3) democrats need to focus and simplify their messaging: for example, these multiple rallies/protests/demonstrations, whatever they're called, that are organized across the country today? They all have different focus and message despite the organizing group gathering its multi-party members under the shared concern about abiding by the Constitution, rule of law, separation of powers. Focus on THAT message. Stop focusing on whether or not Garcia is or is not an MS-13 gang member. It doesn't matter - the LAW is not being followed. All the nuance and righteous details go over most peoples' heads. Trump admin's bottom line is: he's a dangerous terrorist immigrant and should be deported. Dem's botton line SHOULD be: if he's a dangerous terrorist illegal immigrant, follow the legal process to deport him. Or, in this particular instance: the government made a mistake and has admitted its mistake; the government needs to correct the mistake.
