He's not a coward for not filing. He let her file so that he doesn't humiliate her further by making it look like he left her for the SECOND time in 20 years. It's the least he could do.  He did her a favor. He knows she doesn't want to look like she was dumped for the second time.

But he essentially did leave her for the second time. Maybe that idea he was saving her the humiliation would have worked if details were kept private but they weren't. We know he's been over the relationship and hanging out with Kick for months. He moved out and bought a whole house. He was not willing to work on the marriage and knew it from the beginning.
