Interesting article in Economist “Why sex matters in football”. “Feminists have long argued, correctly, that women are not just men with long hair. The unthinking assumption that men are the “default human” means that everything from drugs and smartphones to stab vests and airbags has been designed in ways that are inconvenient or dangerous for their female users. “One paper calculates that a pitch scaled for them would be two-thirds as big as it is now. Goals would be slightly smaller and the ball would be smaller and lighter. Expecting women to play on the same-size pitch as men, the researchers point out, means asking them to play a game that is different from the one the men play—and harder.”
Can someone link the full article without a paywall? Does the author call out that, unlike most sports, soccer pitches can vary considerably within a legal range (like baseball outfields). Maybe women should just always play on the smallest regulation size pitch? I can totally see and agree with the ball argument. Isn’t a woman’s basketball smaller than a man’s?
Smaller ball is harder to control. The thing with women’s/girl’s soccer is the speed of play(team wise) is slow. This allows for physical play to have a greater impact and why the women/girls game in the US puts so much emphasis on physical play. Bad first touch, have problems putting 2-3 passes together, lack of technical skills and being able to play in tight spaces. Unless things changed a smaller field and smaller ball means a more physical game and more injuries. The Spanish and Japanese games were less physical because they could move the ball before contact. So the other team has to chase and the press press mentality does not work.
