Destabilization through division, distrust, and distraction. Lots of uncooperative tiny groups are, at best, ineffectual.  Arguing among them prevents anybody from making progress.  At worst those groups can be manipulated or taken over, and then you've got an enemy inside your house instead of across the ocean.

Russia is behind the "secession" movements to divide California and other states, for the same reason.

Russia is not behind these movements in any way, shape or form, any more than Russia was behind the creation of the USA in the 1700s. Think about it: Russia is about total control of the people through government. Brexit and our Constitution are the exact opposite of that, i.e. the people control the government. Look at the way California is locking down and how the governor is not following his own mandates. THAT is the way authoritarians behave and that’s what the people are balking at. [/quote]
