He [i]won[/i] the election, because there are a lot of not-very-smart, easily manipulated people out there (and Hillary was not a very appealing candidate to lots of people.) The issue with Trump, and it's one that will hopefully bring him down, is that he's in hock to Russian interests, both govt and non-govt, not that there's any difference there. They own him.
