I just read that the actress who plays Dr. Collins had a family emergency in the middle of filming, so had to be written out of subsequent episodes. Her absence has nothing to do with whether people liked her character/how fundamental she was to the show.
That's too bad. I think they did a good job with the writing though. Going home to recover with the phone off after a miscarriage is entirely believable. As viewers it can feel like she's been gone forever, but it's only been a few hours. Whitaker really showed his mettle last night. He's modest and in some ways naive, but he's empathetic, strong, and confident when he needs to be. His rescue and follow up with Robby were really shining moments.
Dr. King will always be my favorite, but Whitaker is good too. You can really see him growing into his role as doctor as he realizes he really is good enough.
Kind of premature to say that since it's only been one 12 hour shift. I thought the ending with McKay was dumb, I don't like that story line. The rock paper scissors with Whitaker and Santos was cute.
A 12 hour shift with a mass casualty event. Growth happens over time, but also in leaps. I think this was a big moment for Whitaker. He was tested unexpectedly not only by the shooting, but by seeing Robby completely vulnerable and desperate. I like McKay, but even if I didn't, that was such a bad outcome. She's supposed to let people die because her stupid ankle bracelet malfunctioned? Her ex seemed to gain some minimal respect for her watching the crisis unfold, and to get hat his kid loves and needs his mom. Hopefully he will insist that Chloe backs off. It was definitely a weird feeling going directly from absolute crisis mode to let's get back open to trauma. But I guess that's the reality of the ER. I would agree that it was a less "enjoyable" episode, but it feels authentic and necessary for the story.
