Sometimes these conversations remind me of dealing with my ex-husband. Whenever we argued, he felt that he was a rational person who had reached his conclusions logically, so it obviously followed that if I disagreed with him, I was being irrational and relying on emotion rather than logic. The idea that two people could have different perspectives and logically reach two equally valid conclusions didn’t occur to him, much less that through either a flawed premise and/or flaw in his logic, he could actually be wrong. Too often it seems that because progressives feel that because their approach formed from their good intentions to help people, anyone who disagrees does so from hate. There are certainly individuals and groups that are motivated by hate. However, there are also many well-intentioned people, who also want to help people, but may disagree with progressives about how to go about it. We should also retain a little humility. As humans, we are inherently flawed and will sometimes be wrong. Moreover, issues are usually very complex, and there isn’t always a clear cut “right” and “wrong” answer. Whenever we disagree, let’s consider the possibility that we may not be as right as we think we are and the others may not be as wrong. Statistically speaking, it’s got to happen sometime. I’m not saying we should ever condone hate, but I think we should recognize there’s a big difference between racial bigotry and parents wanting some control over exposing their young children to content that they feel opposes their beliefs. This isn’t new. We’ve long had cases where a parent might not want their child to participate in celebrations, stand for the Pledge of Allegiance, attend sex ed classes, or dissect frogs. Some of those may have generated controversy, but I can’t remember anyone blaming the parents for racial bigotry.
Well said. Thank you!
