How could Trump/DOJ have even said with a straight face that the firing had to do with the Clinton scandal? Trump and Sessions are on record back in November having said that Comey did the right thing. Do they think that everyone has forgotten and they can just start over?
If you read all three letters, it looks like this was amateur hour. Trump's letter had a grammatical error (split infinitive, not that most people care about those these days). The strange paragraph in Trump's letter about Comey telling him thrice he wasn't a subject of an FBI investigation was downright bizarre! A non sequitur in the middle of a termination letter. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein is an intelligent man. The letter he wrote describing the reasons for firing Comey was almost childish. It sounded as if it had been dictated to him by Kellyanne Conway, and he signed it (for some reason). His letter describes the FBI email probe as "the nation's most sensitive criminal investigation," a hyperbolic statement if I've ever heard one. He says there was "nearly universal judgement" that Comey's handling of the end of the Clinton email probe was wrong. Many Democrats would disagree with that statement, but Rosenstain ignores all dissenting views. Rosenstein also fails to mention that both Sessions and Trump praised Comey for announcing that he'd reopened the email probe just before the election. They weren't expecting the pushback. Trump has done so many terrible things, and the Republicans just look away. Remember Pussygate, anyone? Remember how the Republicans scrambled to defend their mothers and sisters, and then when Trumpites didn't care about Trump's misogyny and admitted sexual assault, they went back to supporting him, utter spineless, self-absorbed scum that they are? The Trump team expects this will blow over, that Republicans will return to supporting him and defending him, just as his low-information voters do. It's happened before. Why should this time be any different?
Rosenstein's letter also does not call for Comey's dismissal. Further, the Rosenstein letter was used by Pence today as the justification. The whole thing is a sham. We need an independent counsel.
Pence is neck deep in the ole muddy.
