I'd also say this is more of a strategic move, in my view. The Stars are in the backyard of the Nationals (an ECNL club and former GA club), which continues to grow by taking over smaller clubs, who are then limited at best being in a MI-based RL league. This gives people on the north/east side of Metro Detroit a national competitive pathway that's not ECNL or RL and one that's stronger than USYS. I would expect those not happy with their choices within the Nationals ecosystem another opportunity and they could pick up a lot of talent as a result.
These two clubs aren’t even in the same planet of clubs, no one is leaving Nationals to go to Michigan Stars. If they don’t like not being on the top team there they would have to drive past Liverpool ECNL to go to a GA club that’s lower level than most of the ecrl options around metro Detroit.
I didn't say people would leave the Nationals to go to the Stars. I'm saying people kicked to the curb might OR those who are good that they try to stash on their B teams. Liverpool is OK but would be a drive for some depending on where you live. And here's the thing about youth soccer. Clubs, especially at the highest levels, get political and toxic pretty quick, even decent ones, and if it's not the coaches, it can be the parents. Combine that with only x-number of seats on a national platform and that equals a new/better opportunity, especially when most of the Stars local rivals are going RL (which is essentially replacing the top level of USYS in the state -- there aren't enough GA Aspire teams yet to compete, maybe there will be). So, your option is basically stay at your current level with RL/Aspire OR try to get to the higher platform. Sure, GA is behind ECNL, but here's the thing -- it's still a pretty strong league -- which is why ECNL and its social media allies keeps punching down on it.
