No. Disney certainly has the right to condemn DaSantis’ policies under free speech, but they went much further than that. They tried to overturn duly created law. If you want to play politics, expect to be treated as an adversary.
No. They didn't try to overturn a duly created law, because they don't have that power. They suspended political contributions to supporters of the law, and stated that they would work with groups and lobbyists opposed to it. That is all free speech.
Yes, this is really bedrock of how American democracy works. Without corporate lobbying, I don't think most legislators would know how to get out of bed in the morning. Disney has a really significant interest in laws like this, as the largest employer in Florida. If they cannot attract top talent to Florida (including graphic artists, performers, people who work in hospitality, etc.) because those people are afraid that they will be retaliated against due to their gender identity or sexual orientation, or because it's important to those people to live in a community where gay people are free to express who they are, then Disney's business suffers. (Plus a significant percentage of Disney's customers are gay, and they don't want them boycotting WDW either.) This is the same reason that companies are usually in favor of things like good public schools, safe streets, nice parks in their communities, particularly if the company is in a competitive field. But, putting aside DeSantis's questionable strategic choice....I'm not sure why this is such a big deal. Can't Orange County just say, "Disney, your tax bill would be $XXXX million dollars. We would like to retain you as a contractor to provide fire, water, trash and similar services within the boundaries of your park for $XXXX million dollars. Will that work for you?" Doesn't that get them to the same place? Or is the problem the bond (which I don't really understand).
By law, Orange County cannot raise taxes on Disney (or any other taxpayer) above a certain level, which is no where near enough to cover the cost of the debt and municipal services. Also, they can’t raise taxes on just Disney, they would have to raise the tax rate for the entire tax classification, which would hit a lot of other businesses and individuals as well.
