Really great article by Andrew Sullivan in the NYT today about how the advances made for LGT rights are being set back by the extreme Left’s all or nothing approach to trans issues and trying to get rid of genders. It really lays out well how things have been taken off the rails and how it’s turning off so many Americans, this dyed in the wool Democrat included. The party needs to have a Sista Soljah moment with this contingent and show the world that yes, we are ok with trans people and want to support them, but there are limits, esp. when it comes to children. This could help remove this as a wedge issue and show that Dems don’t fall for all of the far Left nonsense.
This +100. Unfortunately, I don't see the Dems shedding themselves of the extreme left’s all-or-nothing approach to trans issues and trying to get rid of genders. No more so than I see the Republicans shedding themselves of the extreme right's all-or-nothing approach to abortion. Extremism on both sides is what is ruining our society.
So, dyed-in-the-wool democrat…what is the Dem position on trans rights? We know what the MAGA policy is on abortion.
Largely their position is that when there is a legal conflict between trans rights and women’s rights, trans rights is more important. For instance, the right to safety, privacy, and dignity that Democrats typically espouse for female prisoners is less important than the right of trans women to be placed in women’s prisons. Etc. In any event, their general position is that women’s rights are less important than trans rights.
huh??
What exactly are you confused about? It is quite clearly written.
Typical response from Dems..."huh" -- the continue to be obtuse.
The “huh” is avoidance. That PP knows that take is correct, but because that’s the current position of the Democrats on trans issues, she has to pretend confusion. They have nowhere else to go other than pretending confusion.
um no, it’s because it makes no sense to me. All this hysteria that is. Signed the mom of 2 kids in suburban America. Again if fox news didn’t exist would this even be discussed.
I actually would have said the same thing, until I read the article. I never heard any politician speak about the Trans issue on the campaign trail so I do think it was taken to a next level by Fox et al, but after reading Sullivan's article (I am the one who posted it in this chat) I see that it's an issue that is going on on the local level. It hasn't really popped for me as a parent of college students living in MoCo but I can see how it is affecting parents at the younger level. And, I do know several families with kids who are in the process of transitioning. They are supportive but at least 2 of them wonder if social contagion has played a role.
Yes, of course it has. My teenager has acquaintances where those kids are now referring to the themselves as different names. But really, who cares? So many of these kids go through phases, like dying their hair. Most of the time they are phases. Kids are confused, they are trying to figure out who they are. And I am not referring to medical procedures to change their bodies! But none of this gives anyone any excuse to burn this country down.
Gender dysphoria is not a phase. And saying kids can change gender like dying their hair...just wow. No - all kids are not confused and trying to figure out who they are. A very small percentage of kids are and through formal medical diagnosis are diagnosed with gender dysphoria. That's like saying ADHD or Austism Spectrum is a phase. Gender Dysphoria is no different than ADHD. It does a huge disservice to those who do truly have gender dysphoria to say that all kids go through it as a phase.
