This season of GB has two themes: 1. Grief counseling 2. Bro-mance before romance! The guys are crying a lot when another guy is sent home. Not crying about leaving Joan. Of course, they spend 30 times more time with the guys than the do with Joan, but we aren't seeing the contestants get hearts broken. They are more attached to male friendship than Joan or love. Chock is reminding me of Theresa! He's very intense about how certain they are a match. However, there's no alternative interest by Joan like there was with Gerry also liking Leslie and Faith. In fact, we don't hear Joan speaking about strong feelings for any of the guys except a little with Chock. The season seems to be missing any genuine excitement and romantic intensity on Joan's part. I don't know what SHE envisions a relationship to be. I don't know what her hobbies and daily activities would be. Is she still working? We don't know her in any practical depth. At least with Gerry, we knew he played pickleball and lived at the lake and wanted to go to Italy. He wasn't working. With Joan, we know only the most surface things: she likes wine and cheese at the beach. She likes Sunday dinners. ...???? She's given a lot of details about her grief journey, but very little about who she is now and how a relationship would work. The audience doesn't have strong opinions about who she should pick at this point because we don't feel like we know the guys or Joan, and we don't see Joan having strong feelings for more than one. So there isn't a big mystery that we want to solve. Just more grief counseling, and some pleasant dates in between.
They are not shopping, she is. Hence, we are not learning about what she would be like as a partner. Presumably, they are interested or they should not be there. Perhaps she is realizing that the idea of having a partner is more appealing than an actual man, which is far more complicated. Perhaps none of them compare favorably to the love she had.
Are they though? Do any of them actually seem gaga about her, vs. typical male competitive drive to win? I'm not seeing this at all.
I thought there was a spark on Guy's end, maybe. Don't see it with any of the others. Chock's possessiveness is creeping me out. It doesn't seem rooted in anything genuine and sweet.
Exactly. Chock is going after her like she’s a big insurance deal to be closed. He’s obnoxious and possessive.
This. How does she not see it?
Don't underestimate her inexperience. She married her college sweetheart and was a SAHM. This is not a woman who is savvy about these things. My guess is that it feels so good to her to feel wanted that she's not questioning it.
