Going to UMD even 10 years ago was considered a financial compromise for Montgomery County kids. Impressive how far the school has come in the past 20 years academically, even if its ranking is still so-so.
This same story is playing out all across the country. I went to a B rated state univ out west, but now apparently, even that univ is harder to get into now. People I know who went to Cal or UCLA wouldn't be able to get in today with their stats. There are just many many more kids who are applying to colleges now. IMO, bachelor degree is becoming almost useless now. A masters is what a bachelors degree was 30 years ago.
That's true and I'm not sure which university in the west you are referring to, but IMO UMD's case is a bit different. UMD only became the state's flagship 30 years ago, and with that came a focus on increasing its research standing and academic reputation. If you compare other schools like Washington, Wisconsin, etc., it's certainly true that those universities stats have gone up as well. However these were already well-regarded research universities while UMD was known for sports riots. Today their acceptance rates are still over 50%, while UMD's has fallen to 40%.
PP here from out west. I'm kind of old (50), and honestly, I didn't know much about UMD. But, maybe the CS dept becoming prestigious upped the caliber?
The CS department was always prestigious, and probably more prestigious in the 90's than it is now. However CS as a career has become much more prestigious and lucrative, and UMD has certainly cashed in on its strong CS department.
