It's almost unbelievable to me that in the first presidential election post-Roe the abortion issue could not deliver a win for the Democrats. I think this is going to remain a states-issue from here on out -- 2024 was the high-water mark of abortion as a national election issue.
I am not surprised, Dems overplayed their hand campaigning on abortion. Yes, it is a very important issue, but most people are not getting abortions all the time. Only around 25% of women have an abortion in their lifetime. People do however buy groceries every week and worry about the safety of themselves/children all the time. Abortion is a very salient issue, but inflation, crime, and immigration are more important to most voters.
The problem is that miscarriage and abortion require the same healthcare so you also have to include the 20% of women who have miscarriages. And increasingly, they will need to worry about being investigated and possibly jailed or something that was completely out of their control, or have their travel restricted or privacy violated. This is not a small number of women, considering how common pregnancy is. Over a decade of so you’re talking tens of millions of women who would miscarry or need an abortion.
