The current system/lifestyle/academic expectations leave very little room for error or down time, and this affects both genders. We live in a world where it’s no longer ok to play JV- it has to be a club/elite travel team. An A- is seen as a huge liability especially for top college admissions. Everyone seems to have a 4.0 and 1500+ SAT’s. It’s not enough to volunteer at your school’s concession stand for sports events or be a volunteer usher at plays. You have to have some national level extracurricular or nonprofit. And then they have to tie it all together in a “compelling narrative”. Some kids give up because they’re intimidated from trying. 14-15 year-old boys are very much works in progress and need room to make normal kid mistakes. (And…before anyone jumps on this and chides me for sour grapes or questions whether my kid (boy) was able to keep up, my kid did well with college admissions). Just my observations.
This is all true, but only for a very, very small percentage of young people. Most colleges have admit rates over 50%, and only about 1/3 of people go to college anyway.
Literally, like 97% of colleges have admit rates over 65%. Heck, there are a dozen top 100 colleges with admit rates over 50% and at least one (Michigan State) over 90%.
