Depends if your kid is new to swim and would really improve their technique noticeably in the intervening weeks, become legal in an additional stroke, etc. If they’re very experienced and you’re only expecting incremental improvements in their form, I’d recommend the earlier tryout date. [/quote]

First question you need to ask yourself (because it is the first question that comes up for minis), "Is my child legal in all 4 strokes?" 
Examine that answer truthfully. 
Does your kid kick breast legally? Do they recover over the water in fly? 
Those are two of the biggies, you can think of others.

PP didn’t state the age of their kid. This matters greatly and your comment may or may not be relevant based on the answer. 6 year olds do not need to be legal in 4 strokes to make (or thrive) in minis.[/quote]
