If it's a verbal offer in the Fall, who's taking that as a real sign of commitment? A real commitment comes with $ or a formal roster spot. Coaches and families break commitments all the time, so not sure why anyone would be surprised by early verbal offers for the top players. Similarly, I don't see why a family couldn't "accept" a verbal and then go see if they can do better. I imagine coaches look at it the same way - try to lock someone down with a verbal and then fill in the hole if you lose one of our your good players. Of course, some coaches keep to their word better than others, so it depends on how much you can trust a coach and a verbal.
The problem is if the family gives their verbal but then looks/commits elsewhere. I would imagine there is a large intersection of coaches who offer in November are the same coaches who will be vindictive. This is especially problematic for kids that aren't the top 1-2 kids. They cannot afford to burn any bridges and these coaches are preying on that fear.
Maybe MYS u13 isn’t that locked in even with the early offers. Sounds like overzealous pressure tactics from the club
What makes you think they didnt get a formal offer recently?
Are you implying that the deposit taken locks in players?
Not sure, but a lot of clubs a deposit means you are on the hook for the full balance for the next year.
I was always wondering about this once you get to U13/GA/ECNL. I know at the younger ages you can switch teams at any time as long as you pay your full balance. Your player card is your player card.
That is how clubs should function. STJ charges you $1500 for a player card at u12. I can't imagine what they charge for u13 and older.
