McLean got off to a good start in building a 5-1 first quarter lead. Its FOGO, who has improved markedly since last year, won most of the faceoffs in the first quarter, which allowed McLean to control the ball early in the game. By the early part of the second quarter, McLean had stretched its lead to 6-1, based largely on no. 7, who again played out of the right midfielder position, scoring 4 first-half goals despite Yorktown using three different defenders to try to stop him, including its All-District SSDM, a second SSDM, and a D-pole.

About a third of the way through the second quarter, Yorktown began winning the faceoffs and took the momentum. Yorktown scored several unanswered goals on one-on-one dodges and unselfish passing to close McLean's lead to 9-8 going into halftime.

McLean battled back in the third quarter and had a two-goal lead midway through the fourth quarter. McLean's no. 7 scored 2 more goals (6 goals overall) with no. 3, a midfielder, adding 3 goals, and McLean's X attack (no. 10) and left attack (no. 1) chipping in a couple of goals each. That wasn't enough, however, as Yorktown regained the momentum with 3 unanswered goals. It didn't help that McLean threw the ball away on five or six possessions later in the fourth quarter, including an own-goal by McLean's goalie who threw the ball into McLean's goal on a checked pass. McLean still had a chance to tie the game with about a minute to go, however, a D-pole inexplicably attempted a 35-yard, cross-field pass into McLean's offensive end that sailed 15 feet over the intended target's head out of bounds.

In coming back and winning the game, Yorktown showed the resiliency and teamwork that good teams have and should be a favorite in the upcoming regional and state playoffs. Congratulations.           [/quote]
