Since the new maps went into effect, Ds have held 6 congressional seats and Rs 5. In those 2 races, Virginians have voted roughly 51-52% D and 47-48% R. That's called "fairness" (the real kind, not the BS language Dems used in this current, anti-democratic amendment)
That's not how congressional redistricting works. There are geographic constraints as well; the districts should be as compact as possible. You can't just draw circles around every MAGAs house to build out extra R districts. Rs are too distributed across the state. You'd need very wonky maps to squeeze out more R districts. But now, that's all out the window. Rs want to play games? Ok, we will play games. F MAGA.
Serious question - have you even looked at the proposed new map? 5 of the new districts all fan out from slivers of NoVa. The new D-1 goes from Alexandria and winds it's way all the way down to Gloucester. The new D1 stretches from Fairfax all the way down to Mechanicsville, outside of Richmond. Those are just 2 examples. It's a joke. It's are the exact "wonky" you're talking about, only they're designed to squeeze out Dem votes. It's the definition of the same "extreme partisan gerrymandering" that the MD courts used to toss out their maps a few years ago. If passed, don't be surprised if the VA Supreme Court does the same.
That all sounds GREAT. F the Republicans.
Finally and honest comment, PP. We already knew where you and your party stand, but it's good to hear you actually say it and confirm the obvious - this is just a Dem power grab
Damn right it is! And this would have never happened had Abbot not started in Texas. For too long republicans have played by a different set of rules. They never expected Dems to color outside the lines. But if Rs can push the legal limits, Democrats will meet them.
