Since their proxies have been rendered impotent.  Given their decades-long pronouncements that their goal is the annihilation of Israel, they have no alternatives now that their stooges in Hamas and Hezbollah can no longer keep taking little bites on their behalf.  A nuclear weapon is, for Iran, the only remaining logical path to their goal.  It would be reckless, not to mention outright stupid, to ignore what Iran has consistently and clearly asserted is its national objective, especially given their production of nuclear materials suitable only for military purposes.
