How is mojo still holding tryouts? There is absolutely no way they need more players. There were soooo many great players at their clinics and their tryouts were full. I have a really hard time believing they still need players.
IMO it’s almost always because they shoot too high, focus on the wrong players at tryouts (think: players who are using mojo as backup but end up choosing Virginia elite or Juniors), and initially ignore the ones who are seriously interested. Their tryout sessions are so dismissive and humiliating toward the girls who aren’t the “chosen” ones that it’s a total turnoff. Those players then go on to accept other offers. And by Tuesday at least half of the top choices the mojo thought they were getting finally turn down their offer in favor of accepting at a stronger club and it leaves mojo scrambling. Problem is, mojo really doesn’t play the game well when it comes to courting the ones who didn’t quite make the cut. And by the time they realize they need them, they wind up reaching out to players who have already committed. I hate to come down so hard on mojo but I’ve seen and heard it happen too many times to not call it out. Maybe they think their way is more honest and real? But if they made all the players who come to tryout dates feel valued and seen even if they don’t give them a bid, those players might feel like waiting around until Tuesday to see if an offer eventually comes. But mojo makes it super clear who they want and it’s hard to come back from that.
I think this is Mojo’s issue - they have a reputation of being good for developmental/younger ages and then at older ages they start looking around and seeing what is at other clubs. At 10,12,13 and even 13 you don’t know how tall a girl is going to get. We are relatively new to all of this but I think that was one of the reasons ECP DC happened - take Mojo’s developmental and put it in a program that is better for older girls . I am thinking it did not progress the way all parties hoped and so the breakup. Maybe Mojo is shooting for taller older girls since so many of their in-house younger girls end up shorter than they would like. But they handle it so completely wrong - it’s pretty blatant and it turns off pretty much anyone not on their list. And many of the tall girls go elsewhere. My DD is young and new to club. She is tall for her age but may not reach the 5’10” golden height. She is very athletic- as a friend put it - she has a body awareness, is very strong and is a quick study. She moves very efficiently. At the Mojo tryouts she was on the have-not court but one of the coaches actually came up to her and said “I need to see who you are better than on the other court.” She was definitely better than 5 or 6 on that court. It really did not matter - they did not move around the girls while at every other tryout they did. She walked in wanting Mojo and walked out pretty much thinking she would accept any other offer. She ended up with an offer from her #1 but heading into the weekend Mojo had been her #2.
